Get the scoop on two highly-anticipated prestige films. Plus Tim takes a deep dive into the world of VR.
Synopsis
There are two guests on the show today, Gregg Turkington from the Victorville Film Archives, and Max Eucompco, a sales associate from Best Buy. Tim relates that Max, through his superb salesmanship, introduced Tim to a variety of new technology, from HDMI cables all the way to virtual reality (VR). Tim thanks the show sponsor, Rio-Jenesis, singing the praises of the company's Official Shake Recipe. Gregg disputes the company's “germ-free” claims, stating that some germs are beneficial; Tim vehemently disagrees, and threatens to kick Gregg off the show if he wears his movie-themed hats again. Following another spat, Tim has Max expound on VR technology. Tim produces a VR headset, and repeats Max's claim that VR is “the future of entertainment.”
Gregg provides an update on the Sherlock Gnomes controversy. He has written another letter to Tim Burton, taking him to task for not directly answering Gregg's earlier question of why he did not direct Sherlock Gnomes. Gregg reads the long letter he sent, as Tim becomes increasingly impatient for him to wrap up the segment and move on with the show.
Finally it comes time for the movies. First up is Chappaquiddick, whose title, predictably, gives Tim fits. He says he was glad to see one of American political history's most infamous “rats,” Ted Kennedy, “taken down a few pegs.” He also implies Rio-Jenesis might have increased the Senator's lifespan, and despite his dislike of Kennedy, he calls the movie a great political thriller. Gregg disagrees with Tim's assessment of the film's genre, calling it more of a horror movie. He says he was reminded of The Deep (1977, 123 mins).
Next is You Were Never Really Here or “The Gregg Turkington Story,” according to Tim. Is the main character tripping or dreaming? That's the Sherlock Gnomes-like mystery in this movie. Gregg says it is one of the scariest movies of recent years, and he hopes nobody ever goes through what the characters went through.
To wrap up today's episode is a new segment dedicated to On Cinema's very own Mark Proksch, who is currently “under the weather.” The segment, On Cinema Markives, features rare footage from Mark's personal archives. Today's segment features a clip of Mark auditioning for the Ghost of Christmas Past for a stage production of A Christmas Carol.
After the segment, Tim announces that the Delgados now own all of the Decker intellectual property, and that the next episodes of On Cinema will be in VR.
